A communication campaign on swimmer safety: Swim Reaper Lovers of the sea and waves, aren't you happy that summer is coming? Well lots of swimming in the sea with friends and relatives.. but will it be fun?!?! But I recommend that when you swim, be careful... safety in the water is very important!! To raise public awareness about safety at sea, a social campaign called Swim Reaper was launched in New Zealand . In fact, FCB NZ in partnership with ACC (Accident Compensation Corporation NZ) has launched a campaign on the safety of swimmers, to encourage especially young people to face the danger of drowning.
To do this they used social media (especially Instagram) and a character Find Your Phone Number that is a cross between scary and witty. In fact, for example, in one video, a funny " Angel of Death " or " Swim Reaper " is shown , joking with swimmers, inviting them to be careful, also passing himself off as a "Lifeguard"! After 5 weeks the video has been seen by over a million people, especially on Instagram, and the campaign has obtained 30,000 new followers and 13,000 likes.
But the most interesting result is a decrease in drownings of 20% in just one year and accounting for a third of all deaths in New Zealand. So we can say that “ the angel of death ” was almost a “ saint ”, encouraging swimmers to be careful when bathing! “The Swim Reaper campaign was a great success” declared the CEO of Water Safety . “There has been increased awareness among young people, especially males, that there can be fatal consequences for unsafe behavior in the water!” “The humor of the campaign engaged our target audience, delivering an important safety message, normally a difficult task, considering the tendency for young people to underestimate risks and overestimate their abilities!” So, seafarers, as Giuni Russo's song “A summer at the sea” says… “Swimming offshore.
